It is almost that magical time of the year where decorations abound and children excitedly open gifts from Santa Claus (also known as Dad). It is the joyous season where everyone comes together for a good bonding session and of course, enjoy the delicious Christmas dinners.
A month prior to this happy occasion, parents have been tearing their hair out browsing catalogues and websites for the perfect gift for their little ones. Children these days have everything. Would the Slush Maker from the UK put a smile on his face? How about the Ninja Umbrella from Japan?
Little known to everyone else, it is also the most stressful time of the year for retailers and e-tailers from all over the world to fulfill these gift orders. And that’s not it. The increasing trend of cross border trade has only made everything more complex.
It is not easy being a retailer.
Even with historical trends and analytics, it is difficult to accurately predict the demand for goods. The end of year period has a demand spike or fall depending on which part of the world you are in. Furthermore, the supply side has its own challenges. Storing too much inventory equates high carrying costs, carrying too little inventory results in the loss of potential sales and unhappy customers. Keeping track of the varying lead times of different products from different suppliers is another headache altogether. Few retailers have the capacity to truly contemplate the environmental impact of transportation on their carbon footprint.
The nightmare does not stop here. After the goods are packed, they are shipped to logistics providers who deliver them to the end customer. Unless retailers are able to access the logistics providers’ system, they have to rely fully on what they are told with no idea what is in the black box.
This traditional supply chain partnership has worked well for retailers over the past decades. However, with disruptive players like Amazon and Taobao earnestly winning over customers in terms of variety, price and delivery speeds (is this 2-hour delivery for real?), retailers have no time to rest on their laurels.
If only retailers were able to have a little Christmas too.
Imagine. Full visibility from suppliers to end customers in one single integrated system – Wouldn’t that be ideal?
What if there is a solution out there that covers air, sea, truck, road and rail that can ship full containers all the way to the smallest parcels?
… And it comes complete with a global trade solution that supports denied party screening to ensure every shipment fulfills legal requirements?
