What is EDI?

Electronic data interchange, or EDI, is the application to application exchange of business information electronically to facilitate a business transaction, using agreed standards and with minimal human intervention.

Through EDI a trading organisation can service all aspects of business, directly from its back office straight to the back office systems of its trading partners - Enterprise Application Integration (EAI).

The buyer's purchase order, the seller's confirmation, shipping papers, shipment status, invoicing, payment, enquiries and responses and administrative messages are all exchanged quickly and accurately by the one mechanism - EDI.
